Man, does the new softball pitch at Bessie Branham park look great, even in its winter sleep. Whatever fertilizer they used on the thing I want for my frontlawn!
Real pros in bulldozers reworked the field this summer and the turf just begs to be run and rolled on. "This thing is unbelievable," one visitor exclaimed into a cellphone last Saturday, trying to round up a crew for a bout of flag football.
Only question is: Was a softball field really what was needed? A flat soccer pitch that could double as a local destination for ultimate frisbee leagues might have been more suitable, although the field can still be used that way. It'll be interesting to see how many times the old scoreboard gets lit up once spring comes around.
Meanwhile, the kids from the Bonzai school over on Dekalb Avenue make good use of it just about everyday.
