Conservatism v. toleration

I'm trying not to get too sucked into the culture wars, but Andrew Sullivan (here) makes a great point, I think. The essence is: Just because you tolerate something (homosexuality, let's say, or pot smoking) doesn't mean you condone it. More importantly, Sullivan argues, tolerance is a moral virtue -- a fact that way too many social conservatives fail to grasp. Too often they forget that the Constitution was laid to protect self-determination, i.e., the ability to do basically whatever makes you happy as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. Recent societal trends towards toleration and acceptance (just look who's running for president) are certainly encouraging.
