The dam never built

We'll need a few more good soakings like last night before we're out of the woods as far as the drought is concerned.
It's disheartening to look back and realize that past droughts have spurred big plans to build new reservoirs, blah, blah, blah, and few actual results when it comes to securing plentiful water supplies to slake the slow seep of development into the cotton fields around Atlanta.

Here's today's AJC:

"... metro Atlanta has continued to grow even as it repeatedly failed to guarantee it would have enough water to satisfy its long term needs.

Every drought — including the current one — reminds officials how risky the area's water future is.

Abandoned by wavering political attention, shortchanged on money, hamstrung by environmental concerns and stymied by focus on a tri-state water war, potential solutions have died or gone uncompleted."
I'm not one of these guys who goes around saying government is always inept. Hell, as long as I pay my bills and my taxes, the water still comes on (so far), my garbage gets picked up every week, and public servants diligently pursue my interests whether at the local squad room or down at the sewage plant.
Yet let's hope that our elected officials are serious this time about laying out a plan to actually secure our water, going forward. The image floated by Gov. Sonny Perdue that, unless the Feds squeezed the flow at Buford Dam, FEMA would have to send trucks of bottled water to Atlanta is not a comforting one.
I'm all for praying for rain, but, as citizens, let's also pray for some resolve on the part of politicians. (Pic from city-data.com.)
