Oakhurst's loss, Kirkwood's gain

Picture hordes of tax-weary Massachusetts residents moving into nearly tax-free New Hampshire.
Is something similar about to happen here? At least one Oakhurst family pulled up stakes in the last year and moved west -- into Kirkwood.

Their reasons? Lower taxes, less rules, more open space.
The historic district ordinance crashed and burned over in Decatur, facing opposition because it would add onerous restrictions -- plus not every house over in Oakhurst can be considered close to historic. But it will likely rear up again.
Some in Kirkwood look vicariously to Oakhurst's successes, especially in integrating its elementary school.
The thing is not just to welcome those who might flee Oakhurst; but let's sit down by the campfire and listen to their stories, as well.

There's a balance between historic ambience and property rights . It's a fine line, but Kirkwood would stand to gain by weaving it.
