Atlanta dogfighting flourishes beyond Vick

When I was writing about the Mike Vick debacle, a veteran investigator with the Humane Society said cities like Atlanta are rife with dogfighting, driven by the hip-hop cachet given to the sport by artists such as Jay-Z.

Imagine my surprise when I called the Atlanta PD and asked about how often they prosecute dogfighting cases and they said they rarely deal with it in the city.

That didn't sound right, and for good reason, as this story suggests.

Urban dogfighting -- where the sport's growth is -- has different rules and traditions than the more stereotypical rural dogfights that most people picture.

Fights are more spontaneous, and harder to track. Pride and vanity are on the line as much as cash bets.

But here's hoping that the PD wakes up to the fact that this is going on, to a greater extent than previously known, right here in our fair city.
